Find a GP

A regular GP is the thread that runs through your whole journey, from thinking about a baby to the years after birth. One practice that knows you and your family makes care simpler at every stage.

Before pregnancy

A preconception visit is a good first step. Your GP can review your general health and any long term conditions, check that your medications are safe for pregnancy, make sure your vaccinations are up to date, and get you started on folate and any other supplements you need.

In pregnancy

Your GP is usually the first person you see when you are pregnant. Some GPs have extra training in antenatal care, a DRANZCOG qualification, and can look after you right through to birth. Others care for you in the early weeks and then share your care with, or refer you on to, a GP obstetrician, a midwife or a specialist obstetrician.

Not every practice offers comprehensive antenatal care, so it is worth talking with your own GP before you decide which model suits you and your pregnancy.

After your baby arrives

Your GP looks after both you and your baby in the months after birth, including your six week check, your baby's checks and immunisations, contraception, and support for your physical and mental wellbeing. Having a regular GP who knows your family is a real asset in these early years.

General practices in Bathurst

Here are the general practices in Bathurst. Not all of them offer comprehensive antenatal care, so check with the practice or your own GP about what they provide.

When something cannot wait

Your own GP is the best place for routine and ongoing care, but they are not always free on the day. For an urgent problem that is not life threatening, sitting between general practice and the emergency department is the Bathurst Medicare Urgent Care Clinic. It is for things that need prompt attention but cannot wait for a GP appointment. Walk in, no appointment needed, and bulk billed with a Medicare card. It is open seven days with extended hours, posted on their website.

For concerns specific to your pregnancy, call Bathurst Base Maternity on 02 6330 5210, day or night. For anything life threatening, call 000 or go to the emergency department.
